When Karma Changes Time: Understanding the Dasha
The Birth Chart remains the same, but the Planet holding the thread of Time changes.
There are periods of Life in which a Person almost seems to become different: interests change, work changes, relationships change, the way of thinking changes and sometimes the relationship with spirituality, with the Body, with family or with what had seemed fundamental only a few years earlier also changes.
And yet the Birth Chart has not changed.
The Planets are still in the same positions they occupied at the moment of birth, the Houses are the same, the Nakshatra are the same and the Yoga are still present.
So What Has Changed?
Time has changed.
In Jyotisha, this passage is observed through one of the most important instruments of Vedic Astrology: the Dasha.
What Are the Dasha?
The Dasha are periods of Life governed by different Planets.
Each Planet takes hold, for a certain Time, of the main thread of the story and brings more strongly to the foreground the Functions it possesses within the Birth Chart.
The Planet does not create something that did not exist before. It activates what was already present.
For this reason, we can imagine the Birth Chart as a large structure in which all possibilities are already contained, while the Dasha indicate which parts of that structure progressively become more active.

The Birth Chart shows the Map.
The Dasha show where we have arrived within that Map.
The Planet holding the thread of Time!
During a Dasha, the Planet governing that period assumes particular importance. It is as if, within a choir, one voice suddenly became louder than the others. The other voices continue to exist, but that one begins to guide the overall result more strongly.
For this reason, I find it interesting to say that the Planet of the Dasha “holds the thread of Time”.
If the period is governed by Saturn, the Functions of Saturn present in that Birth Chart will become more important. If it is governed by Jupiter, the Functions of Jupiter will move more strongly into the foreground. If Venus, Mercury, Mars, Rahu or any other Graha arrives, the story changes again.
But be careful: there is no Jupiter Dasha that is the same for everyone.
And there is no Saturn Dasha that automatically produces difficulties.
We must always understand who that Planet is within the Person’s Birth Chart.
Who Is That Planet in the Birth Chart?
When a new Dasha begins, it is not enough to know the name of the Planet.
We Need to Observe:
- which Houses it rules;
- which House it occupies;
- which Sign it is in;
- which Nakshatra it occupies;
- what Strength it possesses;
- which Planets it is conjunct with;
- which Aspects it receives;
- which Yoga it forms;
- which role it performs within the entire Astrological Configuration.
This is the fundamental point.
Jupiter may be a very favourable Planet in one Birth Chart and perform a completely different Function in another.
Saturn may represent a great burden for one Person and, for another, be precisely the Planet that builds the most important part of their Life.
The Dasha therefore does not simply bring “Jupiter”, “Saturn” or “Venus”.
It brings that Jupiter, that Saturn, that Venus, exactly as they exist within the Person’s Birth Chart.
Why Does a Person Seem to Change?
Let us imagine a Person who has spent many years under the rulership of a Planet connected above all with stability, family and material construction.
For years their Life may have been concentrated on these themes.
Then a new Dasha begins, governed by a Planet connected, in that Birth Chart, with research, movement, study or spirituality.
That Person may suddenly begin to feel needs that were almost absent before: they may change jobs, wish to leave an environment, begin studying something completely new, become interested in Meditation, enter a different relationship or question an existing one.
They have not become another Person, but have entered another part of themselves.
The Birth Chart already contained both possibilities: the previous Dasha brought one to the foreground, while the new one opens another.
The Rooms of the Same House
We can return to the image of the House: the Birth Chart is a large House made up of many rooms.
Some are bright, others more difficult, some are used from childhood, while others remain closed for a long Time.
The Dasha progressively open these rooms.
When we enter a new room, the landscape changes: the windows change, the objects around us change, the things to which we must pay attention change, but… we are still inside the same House!
This explains why we can pass through phases of Life that seem to belong to different People, while in reality they are simply different parts of the same Astrological Configuration.
Mahadasha, Antardasha and Time Within Time
The Dasha do not function only through large periods.
Within a Mahadasha, that is, the main period, there are further subdivisions called Antardasha, followed by even smaller periods.
It is like observing Time through increasingly precise lenses.
The Mahadasha provides the broad environment in which the Person finds themselves, while the Antardasha adds a second Planet and modifies the quality of that period.
We may have, for example, a Saturn Mahadasha with a Venus Antardasha: Saturn creates the larger temporal container, while Venus enters that container and brings its own Functions.
The result will therefore not be only Saturn, nor will it be only Venus.
It will be the relationship between Saturn and Venus within that specific Birth Chart.
This allows Jyotisha to observe Time with far greater precision than a reading based only on transits.
The Dasha Does Not Work Alone
Obviously, the Dasha is not the only temporal instrument.
While we pass through a particular planetary period, the Planets continue to move through the sky and produce transits.
The Dasha indicates which parts of the Birth Chart are more active, while the transit can increase, modify or further stimulate those same parts.
It is precisely the meeting between Dasha and transits that makes certain periods particularly evident.

When Dasha and transits simultaneously indicate the same area, the pressure increases and what was contained within the Astrological Configuration has a greater possibility of becoming a concrete experience.
The Dasha Does Not Invent the Future
This is another very important point.
The Dasha does not introduce into Life something that does not belong to the Birth Chart and does not construct a foreign destiny.
It opens a part of the Karma already present within the structure.
For this reason, two People entering the same planetary Dasha will not necessarily live through similar experiences.
The name of the Planet is the same, but the Astrological Configuration is different and therefore the result will also be different.
A Mars Dasha may coincide with major professional expansion for one Person, with a period of conflict for another, with intense physical activity for someone else or with a profound inner transformation.
It depends on what Mars represents within that Birth Chart.
The Moon Opens the Sequence of the Dasha
In the Vimshottari Dasha, one of the systems most widely used in Jyotisha, the position of the Moon at the moment of birth is fundamental.
The Nakshatra occupied by the Moon determines which Planet will begin the sequence of the Dasha.
The Moon’s exact position within the Nakshatra also establishes how much of the first period remains to be lived.
This creates a direct connection between Nakshatra and Time.
The Nakshatra therefore do not serve only to understand the quality of a Planet, but enter directly into the way Life develops through the Dasha.

Even a Few Minutes Can Change the Reading of Time!
The accuracy of the birth time therefore remains fundamental.
The position of the Moon changes continuously and, especially when working with Divisional Diagrams and with a precise temporal reading, even a few minutes can become important.
Two People born on the same day may possess a very similar Rashi Configuration but significant differences in the Divisional Diagrams and in the temporal structure.

The day may be the same, the sky may be very similar.
Personal Time is different.
Why Do Some Periods Seem Easier and Others More Difficult?
When the Dasha activates strong, well-placed Planets connected with useful Functions in the Birth Chart, the Person may pass through a phase in which many things seem to open more easily.
When more demanding Functions become active instead, situations may emerge that require greater attention, transformation, discipline or the ability to adapt.
But here too, we must avoid an overly simple reading!
A difficult period can produce enormous growth, while a favourable period can be used badly.
Jyotisha shows the quality of Time: the Person lives that quality through their own level of Consciousness.
Karma Changes Time, Not Identity
When a Dasha changes, our Karma does not change in the sense that we suddenly receive a new one.
What changes is the part of Karma that becomes more active!
A part that was previously in the background comes to the foreground, while another may temporarily become less important… it is like a great stage.
All the actors already belong to the company, but they are not all at the centre of the stage at the same time and… at a certain point Saturn enters, then Jupiter, then Mercury, then another Planet.
The Dasha decides who has the main scene during that Time, but the performance is always the one belonging to our Life.
Understanding Time Changes the Way We Live
Knowing that we are entering a new Dasha can help us understand why certain needs begin to become stronger.
It can explain why what previously worked well suddenly no longer seems sufficient and can show why a relationship, a job, a place or a way of living begins to call for transformation.
Jyotisha does not necessarily tell us to escape from what is happening. Rather, it allows us first of all to understand what is happening and why it is happening precisely at that moment.
This profoundly changes our relationship with the experience.
Time as a Teacher
In Jyotisha, Time is not simply something that passes, because it possesses a quality.
Each phase brings particular experiences to the foreground and every experience can become part of our Path of understanding.
The Dasha shows which Planet holds the thread of that Time, and the Birth Chart shows what that Planet has to tell.
The transits show the pressures and conditions accompanying the Journey.
The Person’s Consciousness determines the way in which all this will be experienced.
For this reason, the Dasha represent one of the deepest instruments of Vedic Astrology, because they allow us to understand that Life is not an immobile Configuration, but a structure that progressively opens.
The Birth Chart remains the same, but Time continually changes the point from which we are living it.
Karma does not change its design. What changes is the Planet, that is, the Function of Consciousness that at that moment holds its thread.
