The Mantra

The Mantra as an Instrument of Action in Jyotisha

What Is Contained within a Mantra? What Connections Does It Have with Vedic Astrology? What Makes It So Important?

The best-known Mantra, familiar in practically every corner of the world, is OM.

A sacred syllable in India since time immemorial.

It is the Creative Word, the Sound that Creates, the Breath of Consciousness that infuses Life, Support and Strength into all things.

In Vedic Astrology, or Jyotisha, there are very many Mantras connected with different Deities who may also be invoked in relation to one’s own Horoscope or Birth Chart.

The Mantra is a Sound.

The sacred syllable OM

It may be very brief, like OM, or much longer and made up of a group of words, therefore of a set of Sounds that must be pronounced accurately.

The Mantra and Prayer

A Mantra may be compared, in order to understand its function more easily, to the prayers of the Western Tradition.

Catholic prayers, for example, are invocations addressed to the Entity in whom the believer places trust: God, the Madonna, a Saint or a holy Person.

Even today it is possible to encounter groups of worshippers in churches who repeat a prayer, such as the Hail Mary or the Our Father, a certain number of times.

These repetitions form cycles, and the rosary is used to keep count.

In India the Mala is used, which performs a similar function.

Why Is a Mantra Important?

The importance of a Mantra lies in the Actions it can set in motion, in its capacity to intervene in Reality and in the Will that is activated in order to rebalance Life or one part of it.

The repetition of the Mantra sets a deep inner concentration in motion.

This concentration tends to focus a different planetary balance, that is, a different arrangement of the Planets within us: the Symbols and Archetypes that act in our deeper self and that do not easily reveal themselves to the conscious mind.

Jyotisha also provides tools through which we can observe the deeper and less immediately conscious structures of the Person.

Among these, I also use the thirtieth Divisional Diagram, the D30, in the analysis of these deep dynamics.

Jung understood very well the power of Archetypes and of the unconscious world.

The Birth Chart as a Map of Our Inner World

The Analysis of the Horoscope or Birth Chart in Vedic Astrology represents a Map of our inner and physical world and can indicate the possible paths to follow.

Some People may need a Mantra.

Others are able to find Strength directly within themselves once they understand the play of the Archetypes and Symbols that construct a kind of unconscious Film, later projected onto the great screen of Life.

The paths of Life are countless, just as the combinations between the following are practically infinite:

  • the Planets;
  • the Houses;
  • the Asterisms, that is, the Nakshatra;
  • the Dasha;
  • the Divisional Diagrams;
  • the other elements that make up the Birth Chart.

Jyotisha is an Ancient Science and possesses many tools for reading this complex pattern.

Where Does a Mantra Act? What Does Vedic Astrology Say?

Man meditating

A Mantra possesses a strong evocative power.

It “travels” through our deepest memories, into that dimension in which our inner world enters into relationship with something much vaster.

The Analysis of the Divisional Diagrams in Vedic Astrology makes it possible to bring to light the stronger and weaker areas of the Astrological Configuration, suggesting where it may be useful to intervene.

The Mantra, through repetition and through Will set into Action, progressively transforms our mind.

We may imagine the mind as a radio.

Through the Mantra we slowly begin to tune it to a different frequency, a frequency through which we may receive other programmes that our Soul can perceive.

In the same way, it is important to learn to know and manage the vibrations of the Planets within us.

In other words, we gradually learn to act upon that Zodiac reflected within us.

The Mantra is an instrument through which we intervene in our inner world, modifying its balance.
