How Should Gems and Stones Suggested by Vedic Astrology Be Treated?
According to the structure of the Birth Chart, Vedic Astrology has a kind of reference system for suggesting Gems and Stones according to each individual case.
Gems and Stones used for astrological purposes should not be treated or artificially enhanced with chemical colouring.
They should be, as far as possible, natural.
Considering how many alterations and imitations exist on the market today, considerable practical experience is necessary in order to choose correctly a Gem intended for astrological use.
Each type of Gem presents a more or less wide range of colours.
The quality of the colour, its tone and shades influence the effect produced by the Gem.
Gems should not be drilled and should not have major damage, pronounced fractures caused by impacts, accidental falls or other alterations.
Basically, it is preferable to preserve them as much as possible as Mother Nature created them, limiting the work to the cutting necessary to obtain the required carat weight and to setting them in a ring or pendant.
It is therefore preferable to avoid drilling them or subjecting them to extensive treatment merely to make them aesthetically more “beautiful”.
They are delightful as they are.
How to Use a Gem or Stone According to Many Indian Astrologers
In Vedic Astrology, both transparent Gems, with different degrees of transparency, and opaque Gems, with different degrees of opacity, are used.
Transparent Gems
Transparent Gems do not necessarily have to be in direct contact with the skin.
When mounted in a ring, it is important that the structure of the ring has an opening beneath the Gem, so that light can pass through it.
According to this method of use, it is precisely the beam of light passing through the Gem and reaching the skin that transmits its particular Vibration.
If, for example, the analysis of the Birth Chart indicates a need to strengthen Saturn, a Blue Sapphire may be used.
For Mercury, Emerald is traditionally used, and so on.
These are transparent Gems with different degrees of transparency, determined by the quality of the Stone and the intensity of its colour.
Naturally, as already explained in the Overview of Remedies, a weakened Planet should not automatically be strengthened.
Before choosing a Gem, the entire Astrological Configuration must be analysed carefully, because rebalancing depends on the function that Planet performs within the Birth Chart.
Opaque Gems
For opaque Gems, direct contact with the skin is generally preferred.
One example is Cat’s Eye, traditionally associated with Ketu, the South Lunar Node, together with other Stones used according to different astrological schools and traditions.
When a Gem of this type is mounted in a ring, it is therefore preferable for part of the Stone to be able to come into contact with the finger through an opening in the base of the ring.
Experienced jewellers know how to make this type of setting.
When the Gem is instead used as a pendant, it may be worn beneath clothing so that it remains in contact with the Body.
Cleaning Gems
In the West, it is fairly common to place Gems and Stones periodically under running water for a few minutes, with the intention of cleansing them energetically and, at the same time, physically.
In Italy, the practice of leaving them overnight under salt and then rinsing them with running water is also widespread.
I have not found evidence of this specific method in the Ancient Indian Tradition concerning the astrological use of Gems.
Care is also needed when a Gem is mounted in a ring or another metal support.
Salt and some of the minerals present in different types of salt may interact with metals and, over Time, damage or alter certain settings.
For this reason, when the Gem is already set, I prefer to avoid leaving the entire piece of jewellery immersed in or covered with salt.
Simple running water represents a much less problematic solution for ordinary cleaning.
Gems, Stones and Vedic Astrology
The astrological use of a Gem therefore does not simply consist of choosing a Stone associated with a Planet.
It is first necessary to understand, through the Analysis of the Birth Chart:
- which Planet genuinely needs to be supported;
- which function it performs within the Astrological Configuration;
- which balance exists with the other Planets;
- which Gem is suitable;
- which quality, colour and carat weight are most appropriate;
- how it should be set and used.
Gems and Stones in Jyotisha are one of the Remedies through which it is possible to intervene in the balance of the Energies represented by the Planets.
Precisely for this reason, they should be used with knowledge and care, and not simply by following a generic table found on the Internet.
