The Structure Exists from Birth, but It Does Not Manifest All at the Same Time
When we observe a Birth Chart, it is easy to have the impression that we are looking at a photograph. The Planets are there, the Houses are there, the Nakshatra are there, the Conjunctions and Aspects are already present at the moment of birth, and it therefore seems natural to think that everything we see should be active at the same time.
But Jyotisha does not work in this way.
The Birth Chart contains a structure, a kind of complex project in which many of the experiences, qualities, difficulties and possibilities that will accompany the Person throughout Life are already present.
That structure, however, does not manifest all at once.
It is Time that progressively opens its different parts.
And this is why a Birth Chart is not a static photograph.
It is a Map in Time.
Everything Is Already Present, but Not Everything Is Already Active
Let us imagine a large house made up of many rooms.
The whole house exists from the beginning, but this does not mean that we live in every room at the same time.
Some remain closed for years, others are used immediately, while others become important only at a later stage of Life.
The Birth Chart works in a similar way.
The Planets represent Forces and Functions already present within the Person’s structure, but some of these will remain relatively silent for a long Time, while others will suddenly become central.
This is one of the reasons why a Person may go through ten or twenty years without clearly manifesting a particular characteristic of their Birth Chart and then, apparently all of a sudden, enter a phase in which that same characteristic becomes dominant.
The Planet did not appear at that moment.
It was already there.
Time changed.
The Dasha open the rooms of Life.
One of the most important tools of Jyotisha for understanding this process is the system of the Dasha.
The Dasha divide Life into periods governed by different Planets.
When a Planet assumes rulership of a Dasha, its Functions, the Houses it rules, the Sign in which it is placed, its relationships with the other Graha and everything it represents in the Birth Chart acquire greater weight.
During that period, it is as though a particular room of the house were opened and the Person begins to experience more intensely what that Planet contains.
This does not mean that the other Planets cease to exist, it means that one particular voice in the Birth Chart becomes stronger.
The Same Birth Chart, an Apparently Different Person
It is common to observe People who, upon entering a new Dasha, seem to change in an obvious way. Their interests, way of thinking, work, relationships, environment and priorities may change.
Sometimes even the way they look at themselves changes.
The Person has not become someone else.
They have entered a different part of their Astrological Configuration.
A Planet that previously operated in the background may suddenly become central and bring with it a new set of experiences.
For this reason, Jyotisha does not look only at what the Birth Chart contains, but also at when those Functions have a greater possibility of manifesting: the Birth Chart is the structure, the Dasha are the inner Time.
We can therefore imagine the Birth Chart as the general structure and the Dasha as the inner Time of the Person.
The Birth Chart shows the potential. The Dasha indicates which part of that potential is being brought to the foreground.
If, for example, a Planet rules the fourth House and the ninth House, during its Dasha the themes connected with those areas may become more important, naturally according to its position, its Strength and the entire Astrological Configuration.
It is therefore not enough to say:
“Jupiter’s Dasha is coming, so it will be a good period.”
We need to ask:
who is Jupiter in this Birth Chart?
Which Houses does it rule? Where is it placed? How strong is it? With which Planets is it conjunct? Which Aspects does it receive? Which Yoga does it form?
The Dasha does not create a new Jupiter.
It activates the Jupiter that already exists in the Birth Chart.
And Then the Transits Arrive
Alongside the Dasha there is another great temporal tool: the transits.
The Planets continue to move through the sky and, during Life, they pass through Signs and Houses different from those of the Birth Chart.
These movements continually introduce new qualities into Time.
Saturn crosses one House, Jupiter another, Rahu and Ketu change axis, Mars activates certain areas, the Moon continually modifies the daily climate.
But here too it is necessary to avoid a very common mistake:
the transit does not act in a vacuum.
The Funnel Principle
I like to imagine a transit as something entering a funnel.
The transiting Planet brings its own quality, its own pressure, a particular Energy, but before manifesting concretely in the Person’s Life, that quality must pass through their Birth Chart.
The funnel is precisely the natal Astrological Configuration.
This is why the same transit can produce completely different results in two People. Saturn may transit through the same House for two individuals, but the final quality will depend on:
- who Saturn is in their respective Birth Charts;
- which Houses it rules;
- how strong it is;
- which relationships it possesses;
- which Dasha is active;
- which parts of the Birth Chart have already been awakened.
The transit therefore brings a general quality.
The Birth Chart determines how that quality can be received and transformed in concrete Life.
The Same Transit Does Not Produce the Same Life
Let us think of two People simultaneously going through an important Saturn transit.
One may experience a period of great professional responsibility, with more work and consolidation. The other may experience a phase of slowing down, loss, isolation or the need to restructure a part of their Life profoundly.
The transiting Planet is the same, the sky is the same, but the Configuration through which that transit must pass is not the same.
Once again, Jyotisha does not observe only the sky:
it observes the relationship between the sky of the moment and the sky of birth.
Dasha and Transits Must Speak the Same Language
A transit becomes much more significant when it meets a part of the Birth Chart that has already been activated by the Dasha.
This is one of the most important principles in temporal analysis.
If a Planet is active through the Dasha and, during the same period, receives or produces important transits, the probability or pressure that its Functions become concretely visible increases.
It is as though two different mechanisms were simultaneously indicating the same direction.
The Dasha says:
“This part of the Birth Chart is ready to speak.”
The transit adds:
“This is the moment in which external pressure favours or stimulates that manifestation.”
When these two levels meet, the event becomes much easier to read.
A Transit Alone Is Not Enough
This is also the reason why I do not like predictions built exclusively upon transits.
To say:
“Saturn enters this Sign, therefore this will happen to everyone”
is far too strong a simplification.
Millions of People simultaneously receive the same zodiacal transit, but they certainly do not experience the same event.
The transit must always be placed in context.
First comes the Birth Chart, then comes the Dasha, then we observe the transit.
The sky of the moment must always be read through the Person’s sky.
Time Does Not Bring Something Foreign
When a Dasha or a transit activates a difficult part of the Birth Chart, it may seem that something has arrived from outside and suddenly changed our Life.
In reality, very often, Time does nothing more than bring to the surface something that was already present within the structure.
The Dasha opens the door, the transit can press upon that door and… the experience enters Life!
This is why Jyotisha can sometimes recognise an important phase in advance.
Not because it invents the future.
But because it observes when something already present in the Birth Chart has a greater possibility of manifesting.
Favourable Phases Work in the Same Way
The same principle naturally applies to favourable phases.
A good Dasha may activate strong Planets, important Yoga, Houses capable of producing growth, opportunities, useful relationships or greater balance.
A favourable transit may further support what is already ready to manifest, but even a favourable phase must find something in the Birth Chart to activate.
There is no magical transit capable of producing any result in any Person.
The sky does not distribute the same package to everyone, each person receives Time through their own Configuration.
The Map and the Traveller
We can therefore imagine the Birth Chart as a Map.
The Map contains roads, crossroads, climbs, descents, difficult passages and more open areas.
The Dasha indicate which parts of the Map we are travelling through during a particular phase.
The transits describe the conditions of the journey: there may be good weather, a storm may arrive, there may be fog, a road may suddenly open but… the same storm will produce different consequences on a mountain road or on a great plain.
The climate is the transit, the road is the Birth Chart.
The point at which we are located on the Map is indicated by the Dasha.
And then… there is the Traveller.
The Consciousness of the Person
This is the final element and perhaps the most important.
Two People may go through similar Astrological Configurations and use those experiences in completely different ways.
One may react automatically, while the other may observe what is happening, understand it and progressively modify their own way of acting.
Jyotisha does not eliminate what Time brings, but it can help us recognise it.
Knowing a phase does not necessarily mean avoiding it, it means being able to go through it with a different Consciousness, and this is where a Map becomes truly useful.
The Map does not travel the road for us, but it allows us to understand where we are, where we come from and where we are going.
The Birth Chart describes the structure, the Dasha show personal Time, the transits describe the Forces moving through the sky and meeting that structure.
Only by observing these elements together can we better understand where we come from, where we are, which parts of our Karma are becoming active, and towards which phase we are moving.
This is why the Birth Chart is not a photograph.
It is a living Map that opens through Time.
The sky of birth remains the same, but the way in which we travel through it continually changes.
And Jyotisha observes precisely this dialogue between Structure, Time and Consciousness.
